Did you hear the news, Italy got a new coach? Before a couple day’s The Free State Cheetahs-a announced that coach and Director of Rugby Franco Smith will take the coach position of Azzurri.

After all on World Cup 2019 in Japan where they took the 14th position, they want to replace the current trainer Conor O’Shea and now they find the right replacement. As a result, it came one name, Franco Smith. However, he will take this position 1. January 2020.

Who is this man? Franco Smith is born 29 July 1972 in South Africa. Before he became a coach he played rugby. His carrier starts in Free State Cheetahs-a under-18. Basically, he plays like that for three years. Regularly he appeared for the Free State Under-20.

After that, he played in a couple of teams. In that case, his best performances were in the time when he plays for the Newport in Welsh Premier Division. For example in this time he appeared 27 times and get 38 points. But he plays only one season for them.

On the positive side, his playing carrier Franco ended where he started. In the Free State Cheetahs-a. However, he retired in 2005 and become a backline coach for the Free State Cheetahs.

During his playing period, he played nine test matches for South Africa. The first one was 1997 against Scotland and the last one 1999 against New Zeland.

In 2006 first coaching position was in Cheetahs as a backline coach. However, he was in that position for 18 months. After that, he went back to Italy as a coach of Treviso where he was till 2013. After all, he returns in South Africa as a backline coach and in 2015 he became a head coach of Free State Cheetahs.

After all that only we can do is to wish him luck in a new position, and hope that he will be more successful than the previous coach.
